Wheel of Fortune

Upright

The binding term of the human septenary, and Papus gives it Yod — the pointing finger, the letter that opens the Tetragrammaton and starts every cycle in his system. The Wheel is circumstance: the movement no single person originates and everyone is carried by. Fortune here is neither reward nor punishment; it is the mechanism that gives will and prudence something to act on. Without it the human septenary would have no material to work.

Reversed

The wheel felt as a trap rather than a motion — circumstance taken personally, which in Papus's scheme is a category error. Reversed can also mark the turn already past: the opportunity read correctly but too late, so the reading is now about the descent rather than the rise.

At the commencement, the matter began by circumstance and not by anyone's choice — which changes who is responsible for it. In opposition, timing itself is the obstacle. At equilibrium the situation is turning whether or not it is watched. As the result Papus is neutral in a way most decks are not: fortune moves, and the reading does not say in whose favour.
