Wands

How This Card Is Derived

Papus gives no separate description of this card. It is derived from his system: Wands is Yod (י), the active, originating principle, acting in Atziluth, the archetypal world; the number 2 is He of the first series, the passive reflection of that origin. The meaning below is that combination read out — the active, originating principle taken at its 2nd term — not a quotation from him.

Upright

The passive reflection of the impulse: the force turned back on itself and looked at. The figure holds a globe and stands between two staves, one fixed and one held. Papus's second term does not act, it surveys. This is the plan — the impulse examined for where it could go — and the card is exact that the world is being considered from a wall rather than from the road.

Reversed

Survey without departure — planning used as a substitute for the thing planned. Or the impulse acted on before it was ever looked at, which is this card refusing its own function.

In a Spread

At the commencement, the matter begins in a decision about scope. In opposition, deliberation that is costing the initiative. At equilibrium the situation is stable because nothing has been committed. As the result: a plan — and Papus's second term never delivers more than that.
