Chalices

How This Card Is Derived

Papus gives no separate description of this card. It is derived from his system: Chalices is He (ה), the passive, receptive principle, acting in Briah, the creative world; the number 6 is Vau of the second series, the equilibrium restored on new ground. The meaning below is that combination read out — the passive, receptive principle taken at its 6th term — not a quotation from him.

Upright

Equilibrium recovered after five, and in the receptive world what restores balance is the past — memory, the return of something formerly given. Papus's sixth term always repairs the disturbance of the fifth, and here it repairs by continuity: what was is still available. Sympathy with history behind it, which does not have to be established from nothing and is therefore cheap to resume.

Reversed

The past used as a shelter rather than a resource — return that is really a refusal to go on. Or the memory of a relation preferred to the relation itself, which is the quiet version of the same error.

In a Spread

At the commencement, the matter begins in something resumed. In opposition, a history the querent cannot get out from under. At equilibrium the past is what is keeping this steady. As the result: restoration — the same ground, recovered rather than replaced.
