Knight of Chalices
Chalices
How This Card Is Derived
Papus gives no separate description of this card. It is derived from his system: Chalices is He (ה), the passive, receptive principle, acting in Briah, the creative world; the Knight is Vau, the equilibrating term embodied — it carries, transmits, moves between. The meaning below is that combination read out, not a quotation from him.
Upright
The equilibrating term as a person: the one who carries feeling from one place to another. The Knight of Chalices is approach itself — courtship, the errand undertaken on behalf of a sympathy, the movement between two parties not yet in contact. Papus's Vau binds, and a Knight binds by travelling. What he carries is genuine; whether he arrives is a separate question this card does not answer.
Reversed
Movement that never lands — the approach repeated until it is a manner rather than an intention. Or the cup carried so carefully that it is never handed over, transmission turned into an occupation.

In a Spread
At the commencement, the matter begins with an approach from outside. In opposition, a suitor, a proposal or an intermediary complicating something that was clear. At equilibrium he is the link, and the link is in motion. As the result: something arrives — Papus's Vau delivers, it does not decide.
