Eight of Wands

Eight of Wands

Wands

How This Card Is Derived

Papus gives no separate description of this card. It is derived from his system: Wands is Yod (י), the active, originating principle, acting in Atziluth, the archetypal world; the number 8 is He of the third series, the passive answer to that realization. The meaning below is that combination read out — the active, originating principle taken at its 8th term — not a quotation from him.

Upright

The passive answer to seven's defence: eight staves in flight and no figure at all. Papus's eighth term never initiates, and this is the clearest instance of it in the deck — the card shows movement nobody in the reading launched and nobody can now redirect. Speed, message, the sudden arrival of consequences that were set going earlier. The suit at its least personal.

Reversed

The flight arrested — everything in the air landing at once, or nothing landing at all. Or speed applied to something that needed deliberation, which the active world will do given any opportunity.

In a Spread

At the commencement, the matter begins with news or a sudden acceleration. In opposition, events moving faster than the querent can respond to. At equilibrium nothing is balanced — this card is a transit, and the position is reporting velocity. As the result: things arrive quickly, and largely on their own terms.
