Papus gives no separate description of this card. It is derived from his system: Chalices is He (ה), the passive, receptive principle, acting in Briah, the creative world; the number 8 is He of the third series, the passive answer to that realization. Upright
The passive answer to seven's abundance: departure. Having seen everything on offer, the receptive principle withdraws from it. Papus's eighth term never initiates — this is less a decision than a recognition that arrives and is obeyed. What is left behind is explicitly not worthless; the cups are stacked and intact. That is what makes the card difficult, and what makes it honest.
Reversed
The departure refused — staying with something known to be finished, which this suit will keep raising until it is dealt with. Or leaving as a habit, so that nothing is ever given long enough to become worth staying for.
